Schweddy Balls

BEN & JERRY'S

By LISA VAN DE GEYN

Dear OneMillionMoms.com (and any other group and/or mom who is offended by and has taken to the Internet to protest Ben & Jerry’s new ice cream flavour Schweddy Balls: get off your computers and exercise your funny bone, would you? You’re giving us mommies who still have a sense of humour a bad name.

If you’re not a fan of Saturday Night Live, the Schweddy Balls reference and joke will be lost on you – it’s based on the popular sketch that stars Alec Baldwin as Pete Schweddy, a baker whose classic line is: “No one can resist my Schweddy Balls.” (Get it? Rum balls? Hardy har har.)

I don’t know about you but 'Vanilla Ice Cream with a Hint of Rum & Loaded with Fudge Covered Rum & Malt Balls' sounds mouth-watering to me.

But the members of OneMillionMoms.com, a group affiliated with the American Family Association, clearly don’t share my taste (or humour.) In fact, the name has left a bad taste in their mouths and they’ve posted a call to action on both their site and Facebook (to 36,250+ fans) asking irate mamas to boycott the ice cream, calling it vulgar and offensive. There’s also a letter-writing campaign in motion asking Ben & Jerry’s to refrain from ever making more of this limited-edition flavour. Here’s the form letter that moms can send straight from their site:

“As a mother and a member of OneMillionMoms.com, I am greatly offended by Ben & Jerry's decision to use tasteless names for your flavours of ice cream. Your decision is disrespectful to me personally, and to my family.  If you continue to use such poor taste and inappropriate marketing choices, I will make a conscious effort to buy from other companies.”

As a mother, do I find this flavour insulting? No, but I’m not vanilla. What I find insulting is their outrage. Let’s put this in perspective, ladies. There are more important things to be passionate about than hilariously named flavours of ice cream – vulgar or not. But that’s just me. I also thought the outrage about JCPenney’s 'Too Pretty to Do Homework' shirt, which ended up being pulled from stores, was a little over the top as well. But I won’t go there.

There’s a very simple solution here. If you like the flavour, buy the product. And if Schweddy Balls isn’t your taste, don’t eat it.
